Reasons to Study this Master's

The Master in Advance English Studies constitutes the pre-requisite coursework for the PhD program, which has been distinguished by the Spanish Ministry of Education for its Quality of Excellence. The Master's program aims to meet the challenges of a modern global society and rests on the conviction that advanced knowledge of the English language, as well as the Anglo-American culture and literature, is a vital element in the modern world in which different cultures are more and more politically, economically, and technologically interconnected.

The Master's program enables students to pursue a PhD by providing the required coursework previous to writing a PhD dissertation. This continued education program meets the future demands of English Studies undergraduates, not only at the University of Salamanca and Valladolid, but also the many other surrounding Universities.

Throughout the years, the Master in Advanced English Studies has helped cultivate successful teachers in the fields of English language and cultural studies at the university level and also has contributed to the development of teacher training experts and counselors. A large number of Master's graduates have gone on to hold important positions in various institutions of higher learning. Furthermore, half of the foreign graduates have successfully achieved university positions in their home countries upon return.

This Master's has an inter-cultural, and interdisciplinary orientation. Since its beginnings, in 2007, it has welcomed international students from all over the world: US, China, India, Brazil, Mexico, Turkey, Iran, Cuba, Syria, Colombia, Romania, etc. The program shares the same high degree of excellence, philosophies, competencies, skills, aims, study plan, and formative activities of other professional and research Master programs run by the most prestigious European and US universities.

The English language is an international language of science and business, thus learning and acquiring communication skills is essential in order to prepare professionals to work in cross-cultural work environments, in multinational companies, cultural and educational industries, Web-based companies and in new telecommuting markets.

The Master in Advanced English Studies is intended for professionals who need to broaden their education with mastery of the English language and English-speaking cultures in a socio-economic context in which the knowledge of English and intercultural communication is increasingly necessary. The program addresses the needs of future researchers as well as teachers of English as a Second Language. It is especially geared towards teachers of English at all educational levels who are interested in bilingual education and who would like to enhance their command of the language and enlarge their knowledge of Anglo-American Culture in the present economic context in which English has become the lingua franca and international communication has become ever more necessary. Furthermore, the study plan addresses the curricular needs of future cultural mediators who work in the media, press, embassies, ministries, archives and libraries.

Our Master's alumni have gone on to hold important positions in international companies such as Tata Consultancy Group (Budapest), in the exports department of an Olive Oil export company (Plasencia) in Bull Computing Solutions (Valladolid), etc. or as university professors or interpreters (United Nations, "Spanish Medical Interpreter" at St. Vincent Health in Indianapolis, USA,).

Since the program’s initiation in 2007, the Master's program has consistently received high satisfaction rates. The graduation rate has been steadily above 90%, with an efficiency rating of 98%, and dropout rates below 10%.

The Master's is a flexible program that offers three itineraries and allows for a high variety of study and research interests in the field of English language and Linguistics, Anglo-American Literature and Culture, or both. Students are free to choose courses offered by three possible itineraries according to their academic or professional preferences. The combined itinerary that blends language and linguistics with literary and intercultural studies is the path that best expresses the spirit of this program. These three itineraries meet the current social and academic demands of Higher Education of the European System in the field of English Studies. The courses offered reflect the main research and methodological trends in the field of English Language Learning and Linguistics, and Anglo-American Literature and Culture.

Students become familiar with the most recent trends, systems of thought, theories and research methodologies in the area of English language and linguistics and Anglo-American literature and culture. They acquire important skills and fundamental tools of scholarship, bibliographic procedures, and editorial methods. The program also emphasizes the ability to write well, to produce relevant and innovative scholarly and critical work in a specialized domain, to teach effectively, and to make articulate presentations at conferences.

Although the area of study and analysis varies among subjects, the methodologies, practices, and procedures to develop skills are shared among all courses. This allows for different subjects areas to share about 90% of the competencies that form the Master in Advanced English Studies.

And last but not least, both Salamanca and Valladolid are university cities with a rich cultural life that transform learning and research into an unforgettable experience.
